Background

I am a fan of the webcomic xkcd by Randall Munroe. Usually there is a new comic each Monday, Wednesday and Friday, and sometimes it is more than a comic — for example see xkcd 1110, "click and drag".

In the case of xkcd 1190, whose title is "Time", the comic was updated every hour, for 4 months, and slowly played out a story (that seemed a bit boring at first, but eventually got to be a lot more interesting).

I didn't have time to check xkcd in general, or "Time" in particular, more than once every few weeks, so I eventually lost track of what was happening. I also missed out on the fun of trying to figure out the backstory from clues — something that was being actively done in the discussion forum devoted to Time.

The comic frames are still there and can easily be explored using such tools as the GeekWagon viewer, mscha's viewer, and my own viewer. The forum remained active for over six years after the Time comic began (until the forum server was shut down by xkcd). It serves as a permanent record of all the things that were being discussed, round-the-clock, with every new frame of the Time story.

This index was created to aid me, and other interested Time historians, to explore the history of this community discovery and all the molpish things that came with it.

The Main Table

The first column lists the frames of the comic, called "newpix", and the second column gives a link to the forum discussion that took place immediately after that frame became visible.

In the third column, a "newword" is a word not in my dictionary, that is not a username, that appears at least 7 times in the OTT, and also appears at least 2 times in non-quote text by someone other than its first user. (Thus, if it is never used by anyone other than the first person to use it, the word does not appear here). Subject lines are counted (but only if they do not start with 'Re:'); signatures and user profiles are ignored.
