Optimizations are one type of speed improvement (see that article for more).
There are two classes of optimizations, both described more fully under their own headings:
Orbit-Based Optimizations exploit properties of the Orbital Dynamics.
Adjacency Optimizations exploit the occurrence of continuous solid regions in the image (such as the interiors of mu-atoms).
