S&FI : See SFI

S&M : Skittles and M&Ms, a notional weapon of punishment against heretics, administered in a projectile manner. The acronym has a double meaning (Outsider and OTTish) and usage persists because both interpretations reference something that is seemingly painful, yet enjoyed by surprisingly many people.

(see earlier history at chocolate)   ⌇   OK, bring on the chocolate... (@mscha, OTT:585:39)   ⌇   I got a 35lb box of M&M's that have hit there best by date, will that work? (@Opiboble, OTT:586:1)   ⌇   But, shouldn't we not let such idle heretical thoughts into our midst? Surely the Inquisitor must dispense chocolate for StratPlayer's misthoughtdeeds. It's not so bad StratPlayer, take your deserved punishment. Sure the stale M&Ms sting a bit when their high velocity candy shells pelt your skin but really, it's not so bad, for they still melt in your mouth, not in your hand. Mmm...melty yum. (@k.bookbinder, OTT:604:33)   ⌇   We have to be a little mean so we usually mix M&M's and Skittles together when throwing them at heretics. (@Opiboble, OTT:668:6)   ⌇   In other words, you throw S&M's? How utterly fiendish! (Or kinkily friendish!) (@Rule110, OTT:668:31)

Ok, I'll head to the comfy chair (see? we all like those references!) and await the M&Ss. *sigh* (@lmjb1964, OTT:679:2)   ⌇   Speaking as the first one who was pelted with them, I believe order is important and they should be called S&Ms (@ttscp, OTT:679:17)

[...] every popular and neglected tune and verse from the past half century or soH / [...] / H Ready the S&M&Rs and the comfy chair. I must cite outside dates, if I were to convert them to newpix, the bot might better understand them. Shhh. (@ttscp, OTT:787:11)

[...] / The inquisition likes to use hot chocolate and the comfy chair / (The punishment with S&Ms for heresy is very fair). (@ZoomanSP, OTT:937:24)

Why should Yappo be sent to the comfy chair and pelted with S&Ms? / Because his jokes are otterocious! (@yappobiscuits, OTT:1381:2)

sadness : See the Sadness.

SAEWItRBaSA : Self-Appointed Engineer Who Installed the Red Button and System Administrator.

Likely a reference to xkcd 898, this appeared in @AluisioASG's signature from about NP393 until about NP905. The full signature read:

— The SAEWITRBASA (Self-appointed Engineer Who Installed the Red Button and System Administrator)
@Fitzypyro wrote:
I think everyone is just too focused on Time to worry about The Past.
Time Travelers: send us messages from the Past!

sand : A reference to organized sand. (In early usage a word related to organised appears together with sand; later it was occasionally omitted.)

(See xkcd 1349, which appeared just after The S*dness and slightly prior to OTT:1852:14)

I'm planning to organize some new sand, so hopefully I'll be able to see it better then. (@SBN, OTT:1855:9)

What would an OTT RPG look like? Either Pen and paper or arranged sand... (@ergman, OTT:1906:4)

My dad probably had one - he worked in sand reorganisation at the time - but I didn't have access to anything until a couple of yips later. (@HES, OTT:2047:6)

I have a new TimeAccessor! But in the process of setting it up, my sand became less organized for a while and I was unable to visit the OTT. (@taixzo, OTT:2132:6)

And they gathered electrons and sand, and organized them so that their gathering would be a reflection of the gathering in the flesh, that all who would partake could do so, though they could gather not. (@ucim, OTT:2229:34)

I'm fixing up an old sand for a friend; it runs Windows ME and has IE6. (@ucim, OTT:2243:4)

sandal : See shoe.

Sandcastle Builder : This game (a browser-based game of the "incremental" or "idle" variety) created by @Eternal Density to give the Otters a wholesome alternative to Cookie Clicker (link omitted for your protection)

sandwrite : To write (something) in the sand.

SB : 1. Sandcastle Builder, the OTTification of Cookie Clicker.

2. Serious Business, a forum for debates in serious topics such as politics, morality/ethics, etc. Heavily moderated (fighting trolls, flamewars etc.) to ensure that debate is actually productive.

Schnitzelisch : steakish (mock German; see steakish)

scrumptious donut : An alternative to the punsaw.

Blixtrar den ene, så åskar den andre Oscar II. I mean I agree. / That was an ancient Swedish p*n that kind of describes the thread pretty well. (@mikrit, OTT:1474:16)   ⌇   It's the vitssåg for you! / (Which I hope means "punsaw," but could mean "scrumptious donut" for all I know.) (@BlitzGirl, OTT:1474:17)

Scrumptious donut is now code for Punsaw (@Eternal Density, OTT:1475:6)

Seadix : In the OTT's ecclesiastical calendar, the 7th dix of the wip (Sunday).

seaish : large.

I thought we had well established, ... that the River is small, while the Sea is Large. Why, then, should this be reiterated and footnoted at every turn. Why not use riverish and seaish where those OTW (other true words) are mentioned? (@rvloon, OTT:549:34)

seaishness : Large size.

Wall-of-text issues are not due to blitzers. They are due to the immense seaishness of this thread. (@ucim, OTT:554:33)

semencancercaffeinebabies : The material out of which the sea (to the right of the frame in the beginning of Time) and/or the sandcastle, is made.

(This is the first of many similar long words describing the mysterious substance. The following citations give a sampling of the exchange in the early days of the OTT that led to this meta-neologism.)

I actually think that the periods with the couple together have been darker in the forum than the lone periods. When the couple are together, everybody starts theorising about relationships, cancer and (possibly miscarried) babies. When they're alone, it's just a sandcastle. (@mojacardave, OTT:41:23)   ⌇   Fine then. The castles are an analogy to babies. The flags are an analogy for cancer. (@Lord Cathbad, OTT:87:3)   ⌇   Oh god Megan walked off camera to die and the sand castle's have cancer now. Cue ball is going to suicide in the sea of pregnant babies! (Am I doing it right?) (@xspeedballx, OTT:101:19)   ⌇   I just want it to be clear that I am a Sandist. I do not subscribe to Iceism. semencoffeecancerbaconstarsandbabiesonice : The starsand part refers to What-If 83, see OTT:1747:1.

septendix : Seven dix, i.e. same as wix or the Outsider "week" (in analogy to vigintiquadrinewpix for dix, "day")

SFI : Site and Forum Issues, a forum for reporting specific issues and/or asking specific pointed questions about the forum and its management. Discussions must stay on topic, more so than in nearly any other forum.

SG : A unit of measurement, notionally equal to the size of one grain of sand (SG = Sand Grain). One cueball (sense 2) is about 1770 SG.

shoe : Communication, or quality of communication. (In @ucim's Acts of the Clerics stories)

BlitzGirl took the Arrow, and in her halting version of whatever it is that she thought they were speaking, tried to explain. She gestured towards whence they came, saying "Smopu Glie, kavinchi... uh... manhieb? manhiobu?...", and she raised her hands up. Then she held the Arrow, pointed to her head, and then to theirs, and looked intently at the Arrow. "Ambenni... bu", she said, and held the Arrow tightly and closed her eyes. "Smopu abmenni... uh... ambenni! Kiepu glie." (@ucim, OTT:1387:10)

The foreign couple's words are mostly gibberish; there isn't enough of their dialog to make it worth developing an entire language for this. I've picked a few words to maybe have meaning (e.g. smopu - a lot; glie - water;) but left it open (glie - run; smopu - quickly). Calling out to the raft could well consist of names. There was a great cheer arising from the congregation, and the heralds sounded the opening fanfare of the Smopu Hvala, the Raft People's Hymn of Honor. (@ucim, OTT:2117:10)

The Pope said: Smopu hvala nuvi dict amuah! / jimbobmacdoodle said: Whazzat mean? / Beidah said: Hush! It's religion! / The Pope said: "I am deeply honored to be among you." It's in the language of the Raft People. Which I guess is not the language of the Canoe people. (@ucim, OTT:2226:15)

Sorry, Minim : (inside a spoiler) A reference to the "empty spoiler allergy" associated with @TheMinim, in the early NP1800's.

(This begins at OTT:1772:17 with @mscha's comment about some of the (SilentTimer) mysterONGs being revealed more than 20 dix ahead of schedule. See the following few posts for discussion, and note OTT:1772:30 by @TheMinim. Soon @HES commented OTT:1772:39 "Sorry Minim" in tinytext inside a spoiler as a reference to that, and @TheMinim showed considerable aversion to a recent empty spoiler (see the "`spoiler>" entry) in OTT:1773:2 @yappobiscuits at OTT:1773:3 suggested that @Corinne could enforce an OTTish punishment for empty spoilers; this was established as a meme by OTT:1773:16 (@lmjb1964) and OTT:1773:20. We skip a bit, but at OTT:1782:32 through OTT:1782:37 it is still alive, and again at OTT:1786:22, and at OTT:1790:0. Meanwhile @ucim at OTT:1789:1 used "[sorry TheMinim]" apparently as a substitute for an empty spoiler (made clear by the following two posts), used again by @HES at OTT:1803:35 at part of the bracketocalypse on NP1803. I brought some bags. Including a waterbag. It didn't fall in the river. I didn't bring a steambottle (ugh!), just a pump filter. (@AnotherKevin, OTT:573:1)

interj. Ugh.

And yeah, the OtherWiki article is steambottlish indeed. (@BlitzGirl, OTT:1343:36)

It's not that bad! Ignoring all the use of heretical terms of course... I think it's really treeish that it at least EXISTS. It may be a steambottleish heretical wiki, but it does at least link to the One True Non-Heretical Wiki, so it's fine! (@yappobiscuits, OTT:1346:30)

In a hole in the ground there lived a molpy. Not a nasty, dirty, wet hole filled with mustard and a steambottlish smell, nor a dry, bare, semencoffecancer hole with nothing in it to sit down on or to eat: It was a molpy-hole, and that means comfort. (@yappobiscuits, OTT:1406:2)

Same for me, this whole wipend at least. I haven't posted as much because it's so steambottlish to load the fora pages. (@BlitzGirl, OTT:1620:17)

Summit : In the OTT's ecclesiastical calendar, a 28-dip period (one Orthodix OTTish mip) beginning on the Outsider dip called "the 30th of December".

SW : 1. Slightly Worse: a pastiche of xkcd, typically using real xkcd artwork from one or more strips plus some new words.

(The name originated with Jack Saladin on 2008 May 21st; see the thread ITT: We make xkcd slightly worse. and the website xkcdsw.com.)

Anyway, toweek's Vytron Presents: The Lost Frames: / xkcd.com/642 / image / Alt-text: My blog didn't get so popular by saying the truth. (@Vytron, OTT:1530:11)   ⌇   I like the SW. I thought it wasn't a lie, just that the boy likes the notebook and not the girl. (@azule, OTT:1530:14)

Found this on my computer, mashup of several Slightly Worse comics and ottifications that I made a while ago but never posted. No artwork is originally mine, I think it came from 2 comics in the SW thread plus 3 different ottifications, but can't remember which ones they were. Sorry to anyone I inadvertently didn't credit. / image (@patzer, OTT:1704:5)

Also, if I'm not mistaken, not the first manip, but the first OTTherComic. I remember being happy to see a SW after the discussion of it occurred previously. (@azule, OTT:1762:7)

Also, did anybody notice this? An external otty. (@ucim, OTT:1764:34)   ⌇   Great, I almost choked on a scrumptious doughnut (the edible kind) ketching up SW. (@HES, OTT:1764:35)

2. Smallest Wolpy (usu. specifically in reference to @SBN's pets)

Only two of my wolpies are black. The smallest wolpy is a golden retriever. She doesn't go on as many adventures as the other two, she's older so doesn't need or want as much exercise. (But she'll still chase a tennis ball, anytime, anywhere, just slowly.) / image Smallest Wolpy (@SBN, OTT:1998:14)   ⌇   Thanks for posting that sweet picture of SW, SBN. Gotcha party for the wolpies todip. MSW and SW both celebrate their Gotcha Dips todip. (5 yips and 12 yips.) (@SBN, OTT:2085:29)

Tomorrow we'll be taking SW to the molpy doctor. (@SBN, OTT:2192:19)

Current status, LW, SW and I in new (temporary) home. (@SBN, OTT:2301:18)

3. Seaish Wolpy (a mistaken back-formation from SW sense 2.)

Is LW RW or SW? (@HES, OTT:2118:9)   ⌇   :? I didn't think wolpies could read and write (RW). (@slinches, OTT:2118:10)   ⌇   CD-RWs are mini Rosetta stones. T▒▒ E▒▒ : See Voldeframe.

TA : See Time Accessor.

TDM : TheDiamondMinecart (see OTT:1711:38)

temporal shenanigans : Any practice (such as retro-editing of posts) that blurs the distinctions between present, past and future, particularly as perceived by Blitzers.

We of the Order have no bureaucratic structure, so my opinion is no more lofty than any other Knight, but I believe that self-proclamation and self-dubbing are acceptable, provided they be done in the proper Time sequence, and at the proper moment in Time. / So I would think that if any of the Order of Knights Temporal has violated the natural order and retroactively self-dubbed through retrograde recursive shenanigans, then they must surrender their title. / And then, reaffirm themselves in the present, as the natural flow of Time ordains. (@StratPlayer, OTT:309:9)

An OtherComic OTTified before it even comes out! That's some truly excellent temporal shenanigans! (@ChronosDragon, OTT:1778:15)

By the way, HES, I think I saw your hat around here somewhere - it must have tagged along when I was jumping around a bit earlier! I'll get it back to you ASAP, though it might be a little worse (or better?) for wear after some time shenanigans. (@ChronosDragon, OTT:1787:5)

They give me free infinite energy (and perpetual motion), and I use time travel shenanigans to make sure no one uncovers that they are secretly in control of all world government. (@ChronosDragon, OTT:1878:17)

Dracomax has a new avatar! What does this say about the temporal shenanigans of the dragons? (@ggh, OTT:1883:10)

I'd complain that something can't be both "known to be untrue" and "unknown" at the same time, but with the amount of temporal shenanigans and ni ni ni ni's that go on around here I'm less sure. (@HES, OTT:2030:12)

TFW : That Feeling When (similar to MRW)

TFWMNBN : The Frame Which Must Not Be Named.

[@HES wrote: / ...My 500th was absorbed into the mess following the frame-which-must-not-be-named...] / ... / That's a perfect title for the end of time. Or it can be shortened to TFWMNBN, but that doesnt sound good. (@jabelch, OTT:1287:18)

The Forty : Cuegan plus the other people in their community (including LaPetite and the people seen in frame 3016). Most of them are in frame 3061.

There are about forty of us. (Cueball, frame 2891)

What do all y'all think - is LaPetite from the people in the hills or a Member of the Forty? (@ZoomanSP, OTT:1137:27)

Prediction: In the next few newpix, Cuegan will decide to go back down to warn their people/tribe/family, The Forty, that they need to pack up and move to higher ground. (@CasCat, OTT:1139:9)

the Sadness : 1. The feeling of the OTT after Time ended, or the posts reflecting it (In this sense, usually not capitalised)

I was feeling pretty OK this morning, until I read more OTTifications, listened to more sad songs, and saw that beautiful picture of Lucky. Now I am sad again. But do not get me wrong, for I am very happy that the sadness comes from the wonderful creativity of my fellow OTTers. (@k.bookbinder, OTT:1278:24)

I don't want to have to re-read the sadness just yet... I do hope those who delurked will re-post if they don't get thrown forward. (@SBN, OTT:1283:12)

It was good to have a heartfelt laugh in the midst of all the sadness of the last two days. (@Tatiana, OTT:1285:39)

Surely some catastrophic event will have had taken place in the future-present-past. I might actually need a second pair of eyes to read fast enough to find out what happened... 2. A period during Mod madness 2014, of roughly 4 nopix (between OTT:1849:19 and OTT:1849:20) during which the OTT was locked.

I propose that the OTT's lockdown period be known as the Sadness (for the rhyme, and also because it's too endish to associate with Silent-ness). (@BlitzGirl, OTT:1851:9)

Hug for mrob: who faced the unmolpishness of being last post before the Sadness. (@BlitzGirl, OTT:1853:34)

Also, while the Sadness may not have been recieved with the spirit it was intended in, I would offer this: perhaps de GLR, through his most honored Mods, Sent the sadness to us so that we could experience a bit of Cuegan's despair, as they learned their home was lost, an' likely their families as well. We are fortunate that we did not require raftcastles to survive it. (@Dracomax, OTT:1854:0)

3. The emotional impact that the lockdown had on the OTT. (later styled with an asterisk or two, e.g. the S*dness)

Definitely The OTTher True Thread, or the OTTTT. (@Tatiana, OTT:1851:34)   ⌇   Though I wasn't involved, that was what I instinctively thought of when I first encountered the Sadness. (@Eternal Density, OTT:1852:1)

It's time for a / Ketchup Blitz / ... Act 4: The Lockening / ... The Silent Time is thereafter dubbed The Sadness, which seems a fitting title. Ucim enshrines the Sadness in a chapter of AotC, a molpish recounting of an unmolpish event. (@ChronosDragon, OTT:1853:8)

I've been appreciating the input from the mods the last few pages, as we move out of the S*dness. (@lmjb1964, OTT:1899:31)

tieniso : unknown A word with indeterminate meaning, part of @ucim's language of the "raft people" used in Acts of the Clerics.

HOW EPSILONISH IS IT, REALLY, TO BE AT A TIENISO DURING A ᓭᘖᔭᓄᐨFLOOD? (@mrob27, OTT:2263:32)

Tim : 1. A Monty Python reference.

None call me... "Tim"? Instead, I am known as "Vytron", a humble Timewaiter. (@ucim, OTT:699:36)

sbn, I really hope The Enchanter (they call him...Tim?) doesn't see that lawnspiderbot! 2. Contemplated and debated as a prefix in newwords related to Time fandom.

I plan on typing it as "ottification" even on newpages without lowercase decrees. For some reason Timification and Timeody both confuzzle my head — I can't help but read them as "Tim-yakkityyak" instead of "Time-yakkityyak." I don't know who Tim is, or why we should Tim-ify our Tim-eodies. (@BlitzGirl, OTT:871:7)   ⌇   Here's another ottification (still not a Tim fan) for y'all: (@BlitzGirl, OTT:871:14)   ⌇   That ending is golden. By retaining the name "Dawn of Time", the Faithful are reminded of the Awseomeful Event that we are celebrating, whereas something like "Timversary" focuses more on the lay celebrations the heathen might engage in at the drop of a piece of buffydashery output. 2001 now, which is even more appropriate. If only I had the Tim to OTTify something… I guess for now there's 2001: a Time Odyssey (@mrob27, OTT:2596:32)

I really want to check out the D&D game, but there's only so much TIme. Or Tim. (@lmjb1964, OTT:2599:16)

-tim : Suffix substituting for -time in words that would normally have that ending in reference to "time" (anytim, sometim, etc.) (See also Tim)

Wow, ggh, that is a seaish (not oceanish) amount of work you did on that Find the Otter! You have way more patience (not to mention skill) than I would ever have. I'll have to get together with Tim and work on it sometime. Sometim. (@lmjb1964, OTT:2594:34)
