Rotation Number

Robert P. Munafo, 1999 Feb 2.

At a branch point, the several filaments that meet are distinguished by their rotation number. The rotation number is an integer N from 1 to the number of branches. Sometimes it is expressed as a fraction N/D, where D is the number of branches. Rotation numbers are used in some of the R2 system operators; see R2 rules.

Rotation number is also a synonym for internal angle, so used by Prof. Devaney and others. See the Internal Angle entry for a complete description.
