Pinch Points
Robert P. Munafo, 2025 Mar 11.
"Pinch points" are narrow places in dwell bands that are prominent in images made with a low escape radius. Here is an image of the area around R2F(2(3B1)B1) rendered with an escape radius of 2 (the lowest possible):

The dark blue band (for example) has wide and narrow spots, the latter being the "pinch points".
In early Mandelbrot viewers, particularly on home computers (e.g. Super MANDELZOOM) it was common to use an escape radius of 2 because it allows the greatest amount of zooming (magnification) when using integer math.
