math. Combining the symbols ℂ (see CC) and ℳ (see M) with a backslash \ is a peculiarly obscure way to refer to all exterior points, i.e. points not in the Mandelbrot set: ℂ\ℳ
The \ is a compact but obscure way to refer to the intersection of a set with the complement of some other set. This is called a "relative complement", or (more sensibly) a "set difference", operation.
