Buddha

Robert P. Munafo, 2003 Dec 18.

Colloquial names for the entire Mandelbrot set R2 and for various parts of it are derived from the resemblance of the continent to a sitting Buddha (when rotated 90 degrees so that west is up). The term buddhabrot in particular is used to refer to plots in which all iterates, as well as the parameter value, are plotted in the same image; with suitable color mappings such plots are said to resemble a sitting Buddha even more than the normal-style plot. See also topknot.
